Stick to 3-minute rounds of shadowboxing followed by 30 seconds of rest while you’re just starting out. Your talents will never reach their full potential unless you master basic footwork patterns like jabbing, side-stepping, and turning. Learning appropriate footwork will be one of your top considerations throughout the sport. 

Effective Punching Techniques for Different Targets

Balance is the key to punching effectively. Standing with your feet shoulder-width apart will provide you with a stable platform from which to launch punches. With your non-punching hand, aim for your target, lining up where you want to hit them. The second hand should be relaxed and ready by your ear so that you can lead it towards a clear path and keep it in line with your body without having to think about it. You may not understand how crucial these skills are until you try punching properly without them and find yourself frequently going off balance!

Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them

Be conscious that your hands and wrists have become a new bodily component for you. If you do not ease into things gradually, they will be stretched, therefore stretch frequently and always wear hand wraps. Another common starting error is believing they already know everything; spend time listening to and learning from your teacher, even if you think you already know more than he does!
